Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam “Charles Mingus 100th Birthday Celebration”

Celebrate with us during Jazz Appreciation Month as we honor the late Charles Mingus’s 100th birthday with performances of his compositions, including his rarely performed extended work “Meditations on Integration,” as well as intergenerational interpretations of his famed “Fables of Faubus” and “Goodbye Porkpie Hat.” As an inventive composer, virtuosic bassist, and groundbreaking band leader, Charles Mingus continues to inspire generations of musicians.

In Celebration of Black History Month

Over the past two years, the organization engaged 1,200 students in 100 online workshops, but Jazz Power is excited to open its doors to new students in person for first time since the pandemic began.

In February, Jazz Power Initiative (JPI) welcomes guitarists Bruce Edwards and Tom Dempsey in performance, with Jennifer Vincent, bass, Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax, drums, hosted by pianist and Jazz Power Initiative’s Managing and Artistic Director Eli Yamin. 

Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam: “Women’s World with CocoMama”

In January, Jazz Power Initiative (JPI) welcomes Cocomama in performance, with Jennifer Vincent, bass, Mayra Casales, percussion, Nicki Denner, piano, Ariacne Trujillo, voice, Reut Regev, trombone and Rafael Monteagudo, drums, and hosted by Jazz Power Initiative’s Managing and Artistic Director Eli Yamin.

Jazz Power Holiday Celebration

In December, Jazz Power Initiative (JPI) welcomes jazz clarinetist Evan Christopher and trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso in performance, with Eli Yamin and the Jazz Power Band, for a “Jazz Power Holiday Celebration”, and will stream Sunday, December 19, 2021 at 2pm.

In November, Jazz Power Initiative (JPI) welcomes jazz vocalist Trineice Robinson in performance with Don Braden and the Jazz Power Band, to salute her debut recording, “All Or Nothing”!

Welcome to the Jazz Power Reunion, September Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam

After a joyful return to live in-person performance at Jazzmobile in July at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, Jazz Power Initiative (JPI) is excited to kick off its new season of INTERGENERATIONAL JAZZ POWER JAM live in-person on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at 2 PM EST in collaboration with The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, “Welcome to the Jazz Power Reunion” is our September Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam.

As with many organizations in Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem, we have kept working throughout this difficult pandemic, to continue our intergenerational, multicultural work with our students, teaching artists and audiences. And we have never lost our passion about the amazing lessons of adaptability, creativity and community that jazz music has to offer us all.

Jazzmobile/Summerfest presents the healing power of the blues with Jazz Power Initiative! July 16,2021

What a tremendous way to emerge from quarantine with our Harlem premiere of Message From Saturn, the jazz musical about discovering and sharing the healing power of the blues. Our Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam: Message From Saturn concert was presented this past Friday at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park, Harlem, New York City by Jazzmobile’s Summerfest, to 1000+ audience members who responded with a standing ovation for our multi-generational cast of musicians, dancers, and actors from ages 10-68.
