Hello, Jazz Power Friend.
What is Jazz Power?
Jazz Power is youth education and community programs.
Jazz Power is students, teaching artists, educators and performers of all kinds working together.
It’s been a milestone week for us at Jazz Power Initiative. We wrapped 12 weeks of our first ever Jazz Power ON Youth Workshop, then pivoted to join our Northern Manhattan “Uptown Arts Warriors,” providing a virtual Uptown Summer Arts camp for local youth.
Last week, our sixth annual and first ever online Summer Institute welcomed 39 artists, college professors and K-12 educators, from across New York to Illinois, Massachusetts and Japan, convening our largest Institute yet, with two days of workshops and deeply meaningful exchange. Guest artists Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson of Sweet Honey in the Rock, and author/educator Mick Carlon, joined Institute Co-Chairs Shireen Dickson and Tom Dempsey, with myself and Jazz Power teaching artists Mickey Davidson, Antoinette Montague, Brian Fender and Victoria Ortiz.
THANK YOU to everyone who participated, and to our supporters, Lehman College (CUNY) and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
One participant shared,
“I’m feeling overwhelmed with gratitude, it’s really been great. I’ve learned a lot. It’s great to see so many people on the same agenda as being part of the big picture. Everybody here is part of the solution. And we’re using jazz not only to enrich the lives of everybody we touch with it all of our students, but also to use the jazz power to fight for social justice, which is just as important.”
