With guidelines for staying home extended through April, we want you to know that we plan to keep JazzPowerON all the way through. Enjoy this blast of swingin’ sounds and positivity with a very special offer at the end.

Thanks for keeping the JazzPowerON!

@JazzPowerON YOUTH

This past week we piloted our JazzPowerON Youth Workshop and look forward to expanding this week. It was wonderful to see and hear our students again.
We are helping families setup a “studio space” for each child in their home. This is a place where she can create by making sounds and movement. YOU might want to do the same thing in your house. Take a look at the video below with Jazz Power Teaching Artist Brian Fender to see how….

@JazzPowerON INTERGENERATIONAL JAZZ JAM

Our featured INTERGENERATIONAL music and dance performance this week is “Take the A Train,” the Duke Ellington Orchestra theme song written by his long time collaborator Billy Strayhorn. This performance is by the Jazz Power Swingtet featuring Claire Daly, baritone saxophone, Jason Curry, alto saxophone, Chris Byars, tenor saxophone, Mark McGowan, trumpet, Michael Rorby, trombone, Ari Roland, bass, David F. Gibson, drums, Mickey Davidson and Dexter Jones, dancers, yours truly on piano, and a student from City College, Elijah Maduro, on tenor saxophone. Elijah writes,
“Playing with the other band members was not only an invigorating and unforgettable experience, but it was also a very humbling experience. It showed me I have so much to learn from the other fantastic members in the band. I’m so grateful for how welcoming everyone was and every piece of advice that they gave me to continue my path as a jazz musician.”

@JazzPowerON INSPIRATION

We have more INSPIRATION from Nat King Cole who we are studying in our Youth Program. Here is a collection of his extraordinary performances from the television program he hosted including duets with a young man the same age as our students at minute 42:24, duet with Gospel icon Mahalia Jackson (47:50) and featured performance by Eartha Kitt (12:07). You can’t miss it!
