It’s been an incredible journey, and we can hardly believe it – Jazz Power Initiative is turning 20! Two decades of rhythm, melody, story, and unforgettable moments in jazz. What an honor it has been to have the opportunity to transform lives through the power of jazz arts education and performance with thousands of young students, professional artists and audiences of all ages. The Jazz Power Celebration20 honoring the Miranda Family, Phil Bertelsen, and TD Bank will be hosted by Antoinette Montague and Kena Onyejekwe and feature performances by the Ariacne Trujillo Duran Trio, Judd Nielsen’s Organ Group and JPI’s advanced youth group, Zah! Jr. capped off with a Rhythm Revue Dance Party hosted by DJ Felix Hernandez.

HONOREES
The Miranda Family Philanthropy Award Honoree – The Miranda Family
JPI will be honoring The Miranda Family, including Luis A. Miranda Jr. and Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda; Luz Miranda-Crespo and Luis Crespo; Lin Manuel-Miranda and Vanessa A. Nadal; and Miguel Towns.
For over 40 years, The Miranda Family has championed community activism. They have created and supported institutions that have uplifted underserved populations in Upper Manhattan, throughout New York City, across the country, and in Puerto Rico. Today, The Miranda Family’s philanthropic work continues to focus on their longstanding commitment to advocacy for education, the arts, and social justice – along with a sustained focus on Puerto Rico.
2024 JPI Changemaker Award Honoree – Phil Bertelsen
JPI will be honoring the esteemed, Mr. Phil Bertelsen, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning producer and director who uses film and television to entertain, inspire, and provoke audiences. Through his storytelling, Bertelsen explores topics absent from our history books and demonstrates how integral Black history is in the whole story of America. His longtime involvement with JPI began when he produced the first Jazz Power Initiative film, When Malindy Swings and he has supervised the production of our most recent film, Jazz Power Through the Years.
Bertelsen’s Production and Directing credits span from documentaries to episodic television, including network dramas. With his series, Who Killed Malcolm X (Netflix), his work prompted a re-investigation of the decades-old crime resulting in the exoneration of two wrongly convicted men. Recent and important projects include a History Channel documentary about the 761st Tank Battalion for Morgan Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment, The Picture Taker for PBS Independent Lens, the Emmy winning documentary series, The 1619 Project. HBO’s upcoming multi-part documentary Seen and Heard as well as a film about former Congressman and Black Panther Bobby Rush.
The Corporate Social Responsibility Award – TD Bank
JPI will be honoring TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank, an institution committed to serving and improving neighborhoods through financial support and undoubtable community engagement. TD Bank is a long-standing supporter of the Jazz Power Initiative and their community-focused efforts, which closely align to the bank’s own work to support and create dialogues in arts and culture that reflect diverse voices.
Through their corporate citizenship platform, the TD Ready Commitment, the bank is helping drive equitable outcomes in diverse communities by focusing on four drives of change ― Financial Security, Vibrant Planet, Connected Communities and Better Health.
RHYTHM REVUE DANCE PARTY
The evening continues after the Awards Ceremony with the Rhythm Revue Dance Party hosted by the legendary producer and radio DJ Felix Hernandez. Wear your dancing shoes!
Felix created and hosts Rhythm Revue, New York’s first and longest-running radio show dedicated to classic R&B and soul music. Now in its 38th year. Rhythm Revue has been broadcast by WBGO-FM, WBLS-FM, 98.7 KISS-FM, Sirius/XM and WTJM (Jammin 105). Felix launched the Rhythm Revue Dance Party in New York City in 1991. This event has taken place at Roseland Ballroom where it ran continuously for 22 years and other venues throughout New York and the U.S. Felix‘s dance parties, as well as his most recent event “DJ All Stars” featuring other DJ’s, draw over 20,000 people annually and consistently sell out!
